SMEs and AI
AI is growing among Italian SMEs — but the gap with larger companies is widening.
In 2025, 15.7% of Italian SMEs with 10–249 employees used AI, approximately double the 7.7% recorded in 2024. Among large enterprises, adoption reached 53.1%.
Useful AI starts with a defined task.
ISTAT found that the most common uses of AI include extracting knowledge from text, generative AI, administrative processes, marketing and sales.
For an SME, the practical starting point can therefore be narrow: document processing, internal knowledge, workflow automation, customer operations or one business application that benefits from AI.

A practical barrier
Technology alone does not solve the implementation problem.
Among Italian businesses that considered AI but did not implement it, ISTAT identified lack of skills as the most common obstacle, cited by 58.6%. Legal uncertainty, data availability, privacy and cost were also significant concerns.
Architecture matters when complexity grows.
A useful solution needs to fit existing processes, data, responsibilities and systems. That is why we prefer to solve one clearly defined operational problem before adding a wider layer of technology.
The objective is controlled improvement, not digital theatre.
